Cleansing Your Skin

After finding your skin type, now you want to care for it properly with the right products.  The first step in caring for your skin is cleansing it.

Cleansing your Skin

Cleansing your skin is probably one of the most important steps in caring for your skin right up there next to moisturizing, also very important.  When you cleanse your skin, you are removing any impurities on your skin, impurities such as dirt, oil, perspiration, makeup and any pollutants found in the air.  All these things if left on the skin can lead to skin problems in the future.

Steps in Cleansing Your Skin

First, your face should be washed, twice daily, once in the morning and once at night.  More than that would only aggravate your skin.  People with dryer skin may be able to skip washing their face in the morning.  It may be too drying for their skin.

In cleansing your skin, if you wear makeup, please take off your makeup first.  There are many companies making wipe-off makeup remover wipes.  These work great and are very convenient to use.  If you go with these, I recommend you use one that specializes in removing makeup. They work well and most are formulated to remove also waterproof eye makeup.

In choosing your cleanser, pick the cleanser that is for your skin type.  To find your skin type read “Your Skin Type“. Most cleansers now have on the label, for this or that specific skin type.  So it shouldn’t be too hard to find your right cleanser.

A gentle cleanser is always recommended for all skin types.  Any product claiming to have  added benefits for acne or claim to have ingredients to help improve skin in any way(as in treatment ingredients),  is generally false advertising.  With cleansers, they are rinsed off your face and these ingredients don’t stay on your face.   They just go down the drain with your money.

So, a basic gentle cleanser for your skin type is all you will need to clean your face well without creating irritattion.  Leave all the special ingredients to help your skin to the moisturizers and treatments products.

Do’s and Don’ts in Cleansing Your Skin

Do know what is your skin type, so you can care for it properly.  You don’t want to use a creamy cleanser, when you have oily skin, that could cause breakouts.  You don’t want to use a cleanser made for oily skin when you have dry skin, you can really strip your skin and cause dryness, flaking and eventually wrinkles.  The wrong cleanser can cause skin problems that you don’t need.

You also want to avoid using plain old soap to wash your face.  Some people don’t even use plain old soap on their bodies.  These soap can be very drying for your facial skin and can clog pores on your face.

Don’t go to bed without cleansing your skin. (self explanatory)

To Cleanse your Skin

To cleanse your skin, apply cleanser all over you face and neck area, gently massage in circular motion using your middle and ring finger( they are the weakest fingers, creating the gentlest touch)and rinse.  Rinse well and pat dry with a face towel, leaving some moisture on your skin.

Exfoliating your skin is also necessary.  You can exfoliate your skin with an exfoliating cleanser or you can exfoliate your skin by using a exfoliating tool, such as the Clarisonic cleansing system or the Olay Pro-X advance cleansing system.  Personally, I have the Clarisonic and love it.  I haven’t tried the Olay one.  It’s new and if they had the Olay one out then, I could have saved a lot of money.  The price difference is huge.

Toning is another step in cleansing your skin.  A toner is used to clean up what is left behind after you have washed your face, things such as your cleanser, any dirt or makeup.  It helps to neutralize your skin to it’s natural ph balance, therefore preparing your face for your moisturzer.   Use a toner for your specific skin type.   So you decide what your skin needs and go from there.

Toner Tip:  If you have oily, acne-prone skin, beware of all the toners that claim to be for your specific skin type.  Studies have shown that alcohol which is in a lot of your skin type toners….is an irritant.  I would stay clear of toners with alcohol, it dries out your skin and creates a crazy imbalance in your pores and sebaceous glands, which produces the oils.

Some experts claim that a toner is not necessary if you cleanse your face well and your cleanser does not leave any residue.
